A General Survey of Xi’an University of Arts and Science

    Xi`an University of Arts and Science(XUAS), established with the approval of state Ministry of Education, is an institution of higher learning which offers undergraduate programs.    XUAS is located in Xi’an, an ancient city with long history and brilliant culture. It covers an area of 50 hectares with a total buildt-up area of some 200,000 square meters. The university possesses a collection of more than 770,000 volumes in library, 145 laboratories, and 65 multi-media classrooms with 2,200 computers; the teaching equipment totals 50 million RMB in value. The Xi’an Education Network has been built, which covers 2,723 schools and colleges as well as different educational institutions in 13 districts and counties in Xi`an.
    XUAS offers 45 bachelor programs and associate programs falling into eight disciplines including arts, science, engineering, law, agriculture, education, management and history. Currently, the university has a full-time enrolment of over 9,000 undergraduates from all over the country. XUAS has a full-time faulty and staff of over 900, of which, 194 are professor and associate professors; 223 have doctor degree and master degree, which takes up 38% of the total. In addition, the faulty is also distinguished and honored by 34 part-time professors, three foreign exporters and 15 honored experts and scholars returning from abroad. For recent years, the whole faulty have published hundreds of monographs, books and textbooks, conducted 100 national and provincial research projects. Twelve teachers have won the title of experts and 27 teachers won the honorary titles at national, provincial and city levels; nine teachers have won the Huo Yingdong Prize and Zeng Xianzi Prize; two teachers have won the prize of “Five First-class Projects”.
    XUAS issues three academic journals, Tangdu Journal, Journal of Xi’an University of Arts and Science (social science edition), Journal of Xi’an University of Arts and Science (natural science edition). Tangdu Journal, been awarded the national and provincial prize, is recognized as one of the key journals in the humanities and social science in China. Our research endeavours have led to the establishment of the six institutions: Xi’an History and Culture Research Institute, Film and TV Culture Research Institute, Wang Wei Research Institute, Scientific and Technological History Research Institute, Mathematical History Research Institute and Calligraphy Research Institute.
    XUAS cherishes learners “to be ambitious, to be conscientious, to be reliable, to be upright” and stress on the cultivation of students’ ability of innovation and practice. It has made great efforts to cultivate students into high quality applied talents. For years, the University has fostered over tens of thousands of qualified graduates. Quite a number of graduates have been in leading positions as backbone at all walks of life. Nine graduates have earned twenty prizes in international art design contests; and 20 pieces of art works are being exhibited in the world, more than 90 have been awarded international prizes. Nine students have won the 2nd prize in the National Mathematical Modeling Contest. The play Arabian Nights composed by students is awarded a great honor in Chinese University Student Drama Festival in 2006.
Based on the principle of developing along the college cultural construction and focusing on the improvement of teaching quality, the University strives to deepen the reform, upgrade its quality, foster its special features with a goal of developing itself into an influential, multi-subject applied university with four-year education programs, providing a comprehensive education that equips graduates with the technical skills, expert knowledge and professional ethics that are necessary to participate and play leadership roles in the future post.
Advocating international exchanges and cooperation, SUAS maintains scholarly and academic links with Kyoto University of Arts and Design in Japan, Ukraine Institute of Mining Technology to exchange students and teachers. Moreover, the university has oversea students from the United States of America, Japan and Korea.
